StoryBlocks chosen as ALA Great Website for Kids!

CLEL is proud to announce that StoryBlocks was chosen as an American Library Association Great Website for Kids. We're extremely grateful for this honor, which would not have happened were it not for the support of so many wonderful people and organizations, as well as the hard work of many CLEL members!

Picture Books are Important: 10 ways picture books play a role in a child's development

By now we've all heard about the article that appeared in the New York Times discussing the decline in picture book sales.  The article claimed that parents are encouraging their children to read chapter books at earlier ages, and discouraging picture book use - partly the product of a desire to help their child succeed in reading and in school.

Daily Family Literacy Calendar

The South Carolina State Library has created a cool way for families to find fun literacy activities without even leaving their homes! Day By Day SC offers daily suggestions for songs to sing, books to read (booklists AND links to TumbleBooks so that books can be read/watched online), activities to do, and short videos to watch. Each month has a different theme; December is "friends".

Here’s my big question…what aspects of storytime fall under “personal style” and what fall under “best practices”? What aspects of storytime should we leave up to each individual to decide how to present? And about what aspects of storytime, if any, can we say, “Here’s how you should do it, because this really is the best way.”
