9 Ways to Encourage Early Literacy

Education.com put out an article recently called 9 Ways to Encourage Early Literacy.  There were a couple of ideas that really caught my eye.  Number 3: "Strive for Five"  was very interesting.  It encourages parents to not jump from subject to subject with their child.  Instead, parents should ask for clarification, comment and ask for more information.  There should be five back and forth exchanges between you and your child before ch

Two Great Friday Funs!

Since I am behind on Friday Fun, I have decided to treat you to two great videos.

First, Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons came out last week.  He has a great new song and video to go with the book.  It is a great companion to the original Pete the Cat.  Eric Litwin is coming to Colorado this summer to do appearances at several libraries, so keep your eyes peeled for info.

In honor of Maurice Sendak's passing, I would like to share a couple of articles and stories that have been done in the past two days.  He was an amazing author and illustrator.  I think most children, young and old, have a special memory of a book he wrote.  I hope you enjoy some of the stories below.

Preschoolers Get Big Benefit from Teachers Making One Small Change

Researchers have found that preschoolers whose teachers who make small references to print while reading aloud to children (pointing out letters or words, running finger under words from left to right, etc.) show increased reading skills later when compared to children whose teachers do not. This is a small change for teachers that pays in huge dividends. We can (and do) do this in storytime as well! Read more about the study in this article from Science Daily.

Use Props for Singing

Most of us do not have the best singing voices.  Yet, we still sing with kids at storytime!  Childhood 101 has a great article about how to use props to help when singing with children.  So, just ignore the fact that you can't carry a tune and SING ON with a little help from some props.
