DON'T FORGET! World Read Aloud Day is TOMORROW!

What are you doing to celebrate World Read Aloud Day tomorrow? I'm reading to preschoolers - and although that's what I do every day, tomorrow it will be extra special, as people everywhere read aloud to children in an effort to develop literacy practices in vulnerable communities. This is just one of the efforts sponsored by LitWorld, a non-profit organization working to build literacy skills around the world. From their website:

Friday Seuss Fun!

Happy Read Across America Day!  Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss too!  Here are some great reinterpretations of Dr. Seuss illustrations from School Library Journal.  Make sure you read some Dr. Seuss to celebrate this special day or just read some books to some kids to encourage early literacy.

New Study to Examine Language Comprehension in Toddlers

A new study, helmed by Margaret Friend of the Infant and Child Development Laboratory at San Diego State University, will examine toddlers' language comprehension in an attempt to determine if it is a later predictor of literacy and academic success. Toddlers ranging in age from 16 to 20 months will hear words and be asked to identify images on a touch screen that match the words. They will again be tested at 4 years of age. Children in both bilingual and monolingual families will be tested.

Advocacy Tip for February: Create an Elevator Speech

When you meet someone at a party, and
they ask you what you love about your job, do you talk about early
literacy? When you’re chatting with your hairdresser or your
neighbor, and you tell them you work in a library, do they ask what
exactly you do?

When that happens, do you have an
“elevator speech” ready to go?

An elevator speech is a short pitch or
description of a business, a product, or a service. It’s designed
to pique someone’s interest in the short time it takes to share an
elevator from one floor to the next.

February CLEL 12 Update!

Time
for our monthly update on the CLEL12 project, a set of early-literacy
related activities you are invited to complete this year. The actions
were developed as basic building blocks, to help you strengthen your
role as an early-literacy advocate, increase your participation in
the early literacy community, further your own professional
development and education, and expand your knowledge of the CLEL
organization.

It’s
been exciting to see the blog posts that have been sent in as part of
CLEL 12. We appreciate learning about what’s going on in your
library!

E.B. White Writes Letter in Defense of His Dog

Letters of Note is site that transcribes old letters written by famous people.  I have seen letters from everyone from Marc Twain to Marilyn Monroe.  The site is fun and often brings a smile to your face.  A letter from E.B. White particularly caught my eye.  He was accused of harboring and unlicensed dog.  Being the animal lover he was, he had to come to his dog's defense, so he wrote a heartfelt letter ASPCA.
