Thanks to your support and participation, Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy has grown from a small group based in Denver to a state-wide organization in just a few years. Several of our founding members’ terms on the Steering Committee are coming to a close, and they will be rotating off the Steering Committee.

At the annual meeting, I was asked to write a blog post about my experiences completing the CLEL 12 . So here it goes:

If you hire a new librarian to be the early literacy advocate for the
district, she's going to want to join an organization like CLEL. She'll
get so excited about all the opportunities available, she'll invite
others to join. She'll even introduce herself as a CLEL member at CAL
and Motheread trainings.

Colorado front range librarians: Are you familiar with Resource Area for Teachers (RAFT)? It's a great place for teachers (and educators of any kind - including librarians) to find low-cost materials, idea sheets, and activity kits for their creative classroom projects.

Beaumont Library Hits the Road in "Ready to Read" Van

The Beaumont Library in California has a new way to help their youngest patrons get ready to read: by bringing the library to them! The library received an LSTA grant to create the program, which includes a van with 2000 items on board.

Poverty and Early Cognitive Development: What's The Connection?

CLEL member Babette R. has written a wonderful summary of a recently-released study that indicates that poverty has a greater impact on a child's cognitive development than early childhood education, whether or not a parent reads to the child. She concludes, and rightly so, that early childhood education, while important, will not close the achievement gap if we do not also work to eradicate poverty.

How Puppets in Storytime Help Develop Early Literacy Skills

Do you use puppets in storytime? I do; I bring a different "friend" for each storytime theme who comes out to help introduce our stories. He/she/it then sits down to enjoy storytime with the kids.
