Caregiver Involvement

CLEL is Awarded an LSTA grant for 2009!

The Commissioner of Education just announced that CLEL has been awarded one of the LSTA grants for 2009-2010! This is our second LSTA grant!

Here's our new project:

Storybird

Telling stories together has always been a great way for grownups to play with their children. We know that telling stories and talking about stories helps develop children's language skills. Storybird is a brand-new online experience that gives parents, grandparents, caregivers a fun way to tell stories with their children--whether they live together or are thousands of miles apart!

Grammar, Toddler-Style

I came across this article in Science News while I was restocking our library's magazine display! In 2-year-olds Possess Grammatical Insights, Bruce Bower writes, "Budding toddlers recognize the difference between nouns and verbs in simple sentences, even though the kids don’t utter such sentences for at least another year."

Building Your Child's Vocabulary: Tips for Parents

This month's edition of Reading Rockets' Ed Extras is all about building vocabulary in young children.  There are some simple, easy tips for introducing new words that could be shared with parents in a storytime focusing on vocabulary.  These articles are also available in pdf or word document form, so can be inserted easily into a library literacy newsletter.

Reading Magic

Librarians know Mem Fox for her delightful picture books, including Wombat Devine, The Magic Hat, and Time For Bed. But Fox is also an early literacy advocate, speaking and writing about the importance of reading aloud to children. In her book Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever she talks about the moment of her “epiphany”: her four-year-old daughter came home from Kindergarten after only two weeks in school and declared that she could read.
