Literacy-Rich Environments in the Library

Preschool and Elementary teachers work hard to make their classrooms "literacy-rich," that is, filled with opportunities for literacy learning beyond normal classwork. This article from Reading Rockets offers teachers ways to create literacy-rich classrooms, some of which can be adapted to school or public libraries. Some of the ideas I took away were:

Johnson County Library launches a new early literacy initiative: 6 by 6!

Johnson County Library in Kansas has recently launched a new early literacy initiative called "6 by 6".  Their website for the initiative includes parent-friendly descriptions of the 6 early literacy skills, book lists for each skill and videos of librarians demonstrating how to use fingerplays and share wordless books.  Check out the oh-so-darling animal illustrations that were created for each skill
