Kathryn Totten, an Experience Expert with the Anythink Libraries in Adams County, wrote a new book called "Family Literacy Storytimes: Readymade Storytimes Suitable for the Whole Family"!
The book is published by Neal Schuman; you can read more about it on their site.
Kathy says, "I discuss ways that the whole family can learn together. The focus of the book is working with families that are new to English, or with parents who have low literacy skills. Older siblings help younger siblings, kids help the parents learn new vocabulary, etc. So it is more than early childhood literacy, it is adult literacy, too."
Each storytime theme includes several books, and includes ways to use each book for 2 or 3 literacy skills. There's a sample storytime plan for each theme, and this sample plan focuses on only one literacy skill. So as a planning guide it is very versatile, as each theme can be used several times, to highlight different literacy skills. In addition, there's a whole chapter on meeting the needs of the adults at storytime and another on meeting the needs of the children at storytime.

Family literacy storytime book
I really like the way Kathy lays out her books. Lots of good material ready to use for storytime. This one seems to be very timely and using it to work with a whole family's literacy is a subject that has not come up very often. I have to admit that I didn't know she is a Colorado author. Hooray.
