A report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, written about in the Denver Post, states that children who get to fourth grade with poor reading skills are likely to continue to have difficulties later. More than half of Colorado's students, and 80% of minority and low-income students, are in this boat, and struggling with reading. One of the solutions proposed by the Foundation is "outreach to parents encouraging good reading habits from birth". Sounds exactly like what libraries are trying to do with our early literacy storytimes and parent/caregiver trainings!
