In view of New Year's "resolutions", I've begun a new story time endeavor, trying to keep story time "fresh & new". Nursery Rhymes seem to me to be a "fazing out" era. When I mention nursery rhymes to young parents they sometimes look at me with that blank stare and I see panic in their eyes. How very sad, that perhaps they themselves have NOT grown up with these treasures of days past. So, in light of this revolution, I've decided to implement a program entitled Leaping Literacy: A CD collection that teaches rhymes, rhythm as well as all the literacy skills children need to know. What a success this program has been to our libraries' story time! The kids and parents LOVE it! The parents & children are both learning together! What a concept! In conjunction with this program, something we call "reading ribbons" has been a very beneficial addition. The kids enjoy waving the ribbons (which were homemade) in various directions while listening to certain reading commands. Hope everyone has an eventful year at their libraries. Feel free to shoot me an email with any questions that you may have regarding Leaping Literacy. My email is: cfrye@cityoffortmorgan.com. Happy New Year!
Ed. note: Cindy is sharing her library's program as a part of the CLEL 12 initiative. Get involved!
