Music in storytimes builds phonological awareness

Adding a song or two to your storytime is a great way to encourage phonological awareness -- the ability to hear the smaller sounds that make up a word.  One of the cds I LOVE is Songs for Wiggleworms, which sadly isn't available anymore except in downloadable form.  Many libraries still have it though!  It has great participatory songs like "Walking Walking" and "Wheels on the Bus", plus Spanish-language favorites "De Colores" and "Chocolate".  I also really like Hap Palmer's music, especially "What are you Wearing", and "The Hokey Pokeysaurus" from Most Amazing Dinosaur Songs

Most Amazing Dinosaur SongsWhat are your favorite storytime songs? Which ones get the kids up and moving and singing along?

Music in storytime

We always sing at Storytime! I agree about the Music for Wiggleworms-I have my own noncirculating copy!  The husband-wife duo of Peter and Eileen Allard have some great albums with participatory music.  They have a 3 volume set entitled"SIng It! Say it! Stamp it! Sway it".  I use songs from Vol 2 all the time.  "A goodbye song" always calms my active toddlers, preschoolers love "Bodies 1-2-3" and "Wiggle your Fingers."  I purchased a copy for our collection a few years ago so hopefully they are still available.
