Truffula Trees Craft: Guest Post by Becky Corning

This is me holding up my "truffula trees" craft in front of Council Tree Library after the CLEL annual meeting, Oct. 8, 2010. Truffula trees are found in Dr. Seuss's book, "The Lorax."

Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax" is set in the forest of the truffula trees. I was happy to find this "truffula trees" craft because it's cute, inexpensive, and even very young children can complete it successfully. I have a lot of fun using this craft in a group storytime as well as one-on-one with pediatric patients in our "ELMC Storytime" program at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center.

ECRR Prereading Skills:
Kids can work on the pre-reading "vocabulary" skill as they choose the colors for the parts of their trees - pipe cleaner trunks and pom pom crowns.  Making the craft can also address the prereading skill "print motivation," because making the craft extends the child's enjoyment of the book.

Complete instructions for the truffula trees craft can be found here: www.craftjr.com/dr-seuss-lorax-truffula-trees-craft/

You can find more information about "The Lorax" at the publisher's Web site: http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl/9780394823379.html

"Unless someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not." This is the message of "The Lorax" from Dr. Seuss's book. The Lorax prevents the truffula trees from being destroyed for commerce.
