I just got through reading a new book published this year called Moose on the Loose by Kathy-jo Wargin, Illustrated by John Bendall-Brunello. It begins with a basic question, "What would you do with a moose on the loose? Would you chase him or race him, or stand up to face him?" On the subsequent pages, you are asked what you would do if the moose was in your yard, your house, your room, your tub, your bed, etc. There is a lot of rhyming throughout and the watercolor illustrations are similar in style to the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series that are illustrated by Felicia Bond.
Overall, it's a fun book for storytime but it got me thinking, do I have a favorite book that demonstrates the rhyming aspect of phonological awareness? Every year there are quite a few picture books published that use rhyme to tell their tale. Some are much better than others and there's nothing worse than a picture book where the rhyme is forced.
So I looked through my list of favorites and here are 3 that I like:
For Early Talkers: Hug Hug! by Lorie Grover (Boardbook format so it won't always work for large storytime cro
wds).
For Talkers: Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming
For Pre-Readers: Ten Terrible Dinosaurs by Paul Stickland
But one of my very favorites published in 2009 is Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas -- funny, vibrant illustrations and great for your pre-reader audience!
What are some of your favorites? Please share!
