Props in Storytime

Post by Jeff G.

For my library storytimes, I find it fun to bring props from home.  For a storytime during the recent rains, I brought out a folded up rain poncho, a small retracted umbrella, and rain boots.  I then had the children guess what the items were.  This activity helps build a child's vocabulary skills.  I then suggested to the caregivers that when they are at home, to bring out rain gear and have the child talk about their experiences outside in the rain.   The child's narrative skills are developed in this activity of describing events with the help of props.  Vocabulary and narrative skills are two of the six early literacy skills that help a young child get ready to read.

What are some memorable storytime props you have brought from home?
