The Importance of Music

Singing is an integral component to the Every Child Ready to Read jargon that we share with parents and caregivers every day. This article goes even further to explain the benefits of shared music-making, including the postulation that it could have even more benefits than shared reading (gasp!)

Regardless of whether reading or music-making is more beneficial, the connective tissue of both is doing these activities informally and together. Neither one is as positive when a child is engaged in a solo endeavor as when there is joint activity happening.

Try putting some of these tidbits into your next musical storytime activity:

  • Music helps build social skills

  • Informal learning makes learning fun and more likely to be repeated

  • Learning together builds bonds between child and caregiver
