Fun with Books: It Looked Like Spilt Milk
It's spring time once again! That means stepping out into the fresh air, observing the signs of spring and finding new ways to engage little ones who've been stuck inside for much too long!
One fun way to do this is by using the book, It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw. In this book, kids are given many different white shapes that resemble things from their world- a mitten, a tree, an ice cream cone. In the end we find out that it was really just a cloud in the sky. After you read this book, little ones can then take a "cloud walk" outside- take a short walk and talk about the clouds you see! Are they the same as the book? Different? What do they think they look like?
This activity is a great way to incorporate some of the five early literacy practices- specifically Read, Talk, and Play. The fund doesn't have to end there though! You can extend this activity further by having children make cloud pictures when they come inside (Write) or even singing songs about clouds or spring (Sing) as you walk!
